Deck collapse…
This video of a simulated deck collapse put on by the North American Deck and Railing Association shows homeowners what can happen when a deck fails. When the deck structure fails, the deck collapses suddenly and without notice–potentially endangering anyone on or near the deck.
Several years back we had a client who experienced a deck collapse similar to what is shown in the video. He had invited some buddies over to his place and as several of them were hanging out on the deck, it suddenly dropped. Upon inspection, the deck had suffered termite and wood rot damage that gave way under the weight of several men. Thankfully the deck was only a few feet off the ground and no one was hurt. That is, except for the host’s pride… that suffered a catastrophic wound.
Decks can be repaired. Egos on the other hand…
