Cincinnati Ceiling Fan Installation

Many Cincinnati homeowners think that a ceiling fan installation is simple or that the fan itself is little more than a commodity. Some big box stores offer basic installation packages, but this is problematic for a host of reasons.

There is a lot more to ceiling fan installation than you might think. How the fan’s housing is mounted and how the electrical line is run are critical. Just because there is a light in the spot you’d like to place a fan doesn’t mean setting up a fan will be easy.

Ceiling Fan Installations can get Complicated

Firstly, ceiling fans are not always easy to assemble out of the box. It can take as long as half an hour to an hour just to put together. The mount that your current ceiling light is attached to is unlikely to fit or hold a ceiling fan. There are several different styles of mounts and ways to retrofit an existing light box to bear a fan’s weight, but whatever the case, you have to be sure that the ceiling fan is mounted, braced, and weighted properly. You want to ensure this primarily for safety reasons but also to prevent any wobbling and drooping.

The other issue with ceiling fan installation is the wiring. Typically with a ceiling fan installation, you have a separate “hotwire” that used to control not only the light but also the motor. To utilize the hotwire, you need what’s known as a “two gang box” so you have separate switches for the light and fan. Otherwise you’ll be stuck with using the pull-chains to control things independently.

Or, if you’re fan comes with a remote, you can get away with a single source of power by using the switch to turn the fan on and the remote to control light and fan speed. Though maybe not as ideal as some homeowners would like, this option would certainly save a lot of money being spent on rewiring the ceiling.

One of the reasons homeowners find themselves paying inordinate amounts of money for a ceiling fan install is that they’re trying to install it in a spot with no electrical wiring whatsoever. If, for instance, an electrician has to cut along the joists in your ceiling, that can be horribly labor intensive and expensive. What might usually cost a few hundred bucks could turn into a project over $1,000!

Biggest Problems with Ceiling Fan Installations

The two biggest annoyances of owning a ceiling fan have to do with poor and improperly: a) the ceiling fan is out of balance, causing it to wobble when it’s running, and b) it’s noisy. It’s very important to use a balance kit appropriately so that the fan’s assembly doesn’t wobble or clatter, and that’s something that you simply learn with experience.

Experience, as in many home repair and improvement projects, is always important—not the homeowner’s (although that helps too sometimes) but the craftsman’s. When you hire someone to install your ceiling fan, make sure it’s someone who’s done several in the past.

Despite their already long history, ceiling fans seem to be a fixture that many homeowners like having even as our homes get “smarter” and more complicated. For good reason, too; ceiling fans are useful all year round for air circulation, provide an additional source of light, and can add a great aesthetic to a room.
