Carbon Monoxide Detector Maintenance

It’s that time of the year again to set our clocks forward but also time to consider regular home maintenance items that everybody should be addressing. Here’s a friendly reminder and checklist to maintain your carbon monoxide detector.

It is a good idea to make a habit of checking the following things every time you change your clock in order to protect your home from fire damage and carbon monoxide poisoning.

    1. Install a carbon monoxide detector if you don’t have one already – A detector will ensure that the carbon monoxide levels in your home don’t reach dangerous and lethal levels. Click here for step-by-step how-to install a carbon monoxide detector.
    1. Test and change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors –Testing your detectors is always wise and should be done as regularly as you can. Batteries are prone to run out, so changing them at least twice a year is a good idea so that they can respond in the event of an emergency. Click for directions on how-to change batteries.
    1. Replace smoke alarms older than 8-10 years, and carbon monoxide detectors older than 5 – Even if your detectors appear to be working after this long, you should change them anyways to ensure that they do not fail when they are needed.
