How to Clean and Seal Your Deck

With a Few Tips, You Can Clean and Seal Your Own Deck

Now that summer is just about in full swing, now is the best time of the year to clean and seal your deck.  You can choose to hire a company like ProMaster to do it for you–which is great if you have neither the time nor inclination to tackle such a deck project.  But if you are willing to expend the physical effort, cleaning and sealing a deck isn’t a difficult task.  You simply need the right tools, materials and a simple plan of attack.

In this video, I’ll show you how to clean and seal your deck this year, saving you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars from having to pay someone to do it for you.

In addition, the time spent performing such preventive deck maintenance will ensure the maximum life expectancy and performance from your deck for many years to come.   If you suspect that your deck might have deteriorated beyond the point where a simple clean and seal will help, I’d recommend you read my post on Deck Restoration or Deck Replacement.

I’ll warn you, though, that this project is physically challenging—so please don’t attempt to do this chore if you’re not medically suited for hard physical labor.

OK, all disclaimers aside (my lawyer will be happy) let’s get to work.  Cleaning and sealing your deck is simple if you just know what items to purchase and have a basic understanding of how to perform the task.  In the video, I’ll briefly cover:

  • What type of cleaning agent to purchase for your deck
  • What sort of tools and equipment are needed to clean your deck
  • How to apply stain or sealer to your deck

Perform Deck Repairs Before Cleaning or Sealing

In the video, I also also point out a few deck repair issue to look out for.  For more information on deck repairs, read my recent post, Signs that it is Time for a Deck Repair.  For most homeowners, these deck repairs are better left to a professional like ProMaster, but they are nevertheless important to spot and resolve before they become a major problem.
